Other Hints for Subject Heading Searching
  1. The subject heading search on the Basic Search screen uses Library of Congress Subject Headings and all other subject headings which appear in the database
  2. Omit accent marks and all other punctuation in the subject heading EXCEPT subdivision marks.
  3. Use two hyphens (--) to separate a subdivision from a subject heading.
  4. Truncation on the right is assumed in a subject heading search.
  5. If you aren't sure of spelling and a search results in no matches:
    • Try shortening the subject heading
    • Try searching by author, title, or keyword.
  6. Because of the many cross-references provided, you may be presented with a *Search Under... or *Search Also Under... cross-reference. You may redirect your search to these alternative headings by selecting the entry.
